How renting works
Renting an outfit on RentNShine takes seven steps, from picking your dates to getting your deposit back. Here is exactly what happens at each one — and what we do to make sure both sides hold up their end.
From browsing to giving it back
Every rental follows the same path. You can see exactly where yours is at any time from your order page.
- 01
Find your outfit
Browse by occasion, category, size, city or budget. Every listing is posted by a real seller and shows the actual garment — its condition, measurements and what is included.
- 02
Pick your rental dates
Choose the days you need the outfit. The availability calendar only offers dates the piece is genuinely free, and it accounts for the cleaning and preparation time a seller needs between bookings.
Preparation buffer: by default we hold 5 days either side of a booking so the outfit is cleaned, pressed and checked before it reaches you. Some sellers set their own preparation window.
- 03
Checkout and pay
Your total is the rental fee plus delivery, and — where the seller requires one — a refundable security deposit. Payment is taken up front and held against the order rather than being handed straight to the seller.
- 04
The seller confirms
The seller is notified and either accepts your booking or declines it. If they decline, or cannot fulfil the dates, the order is cancelled and refunded in full — you are never left holding a booking the seller cannot honour.
- 05
Delivery or local pickup
Most orders ship by courier with tracking you can follow from your order page. Sellers who offer local pickup instead hand the outfit over in person, confirmed with a one-time code so no one else can collect it.
- 06
Wear it and shine
The outfit is yours for the dates you booked. If anything is wrong when it arrives — wrong item, not as described, damaged in transit — raise it immediately from the order page rather than after the event.
- 07
Return and inspection
Mark the return on your order page and send it back the way it came. The seller then has a short inspection window to confirm the outfit came back as it went out. Once that clears, your security deposit is released.
Return the outfit on time. Late returns block the next renter’s booking and can reduce your deposit.
Why this is safe to do with a stranger
A rental marketplace only works if both sides can trust an outfit and a payment will move in the right direction. These are the mechanics that make that true.
Money held, not handed over
Your payment sits with the platform through the rental. Sellers are paid out after the order completes, which is what makes refunds and dispute outcomes enforceable.
Refundable deposit
Where a deposit applies, it is returned after the seller’s inspection clears. Any deduction has to be raised as a claim with evidence — it is not the seller’s call alone.
Every step is logged
Confirmation, dispatch, delivery, return and inspection are all timestamped on the order. If a disagreement comes up, there is a record rather than two conflicting memories.
Talk in-app
Message the seller from the order itself — sizing, alterations, handover details. Keeping it on the platform means the conversation is there if support needs to look at it.
Full refund if declined
If the seller declines the booking, the order is cancelled and refunded in full. You are not charged for a rental that never happened.
Support when it goes wrong
Damage, late delivery, an item that is not as described — each has a formal claim route with an admin decision at the end of it.
Looking after someone else’s outfit
Most of these listings are personal pieces, not warehouse stock. A little care keeps the whole thing working.
Do not launder it yourself
Sellers handle cleaning between rentals and know how the fabric behaves. Home washing is how delicate pieces get ruined.
Keep the packaging
Send the outfit back in what it arrived in, with any accessories, hangers or garment bags that came with it.
Return on the date you booked
Someone else’s booking usually starts right after your buffer ends. Late returns cascade.
Raise problems immediately
A photo on arrival is worth far more than a description a week later.
Be honest about accidents
Spills happen at weddings. Telling the seller early is always cheaper than hoping they will not notice.
Keep it on the platform
Paying or arranging outside RentNShine voids every protection on this page.
Common questions
When can I cancel a rental?
You can cancel while the order is still in the confirmed stage. Once the seller marks it ready to ship, the outfit is being prepared and dispatched for you and the order is locked — at that point only the platform can cancel it, for example if the courier flow fails. Cancel early if your plans change.
Why can I not book the dates right before someone else’s rental?
Each booking reserves a preparation buffer around it — 5 days by default — so the outfit can be cleaned, pressed and inspected between renters. Those buffer days are blocked out on the calendar even though nobody is wearing the outfit.
Is the security deposit an extra charge?
No. It is refundable and held against the order. Once the seller’s inspection clears, it is released back to you. It only gets touched if there is an approved claim for damage or loss.
What if the outfit does not fit?
Check the measurements on the listing before you book, and message the seller if anything is unclear — that is what in-app chat is for. If the item that arrives does not match what was listed, raise it straight away from the order page rather than waiting until after your event.
What happens if I return the outfit late?
A late return is flagged as overdue on the order. It blocks the next renter’s dates and may lead to a deduction from your deposit. If you know you are going to be late, message the seller before the return date rather than after it.
What if the outfit is damaged while I have it?
Tell the seller as soon as it happens. Normal wear from wearing an outfit for an evening is expected and is not a damage claim. Real damage — tears, burns, stains that will not clean, loss — is raised as a claim, reviewed with evidence from both sides, and settled against the deposit.
