Yes, it is safe to rent out your clothes on RentNShine when you follow a few simple rules. The renter pays upfront and RentNShine holds the money, a refundable deposit covers genuine damage, you control your own calendar, and every order has a timestamped record and a formal dispute process if anything goes wrong.
That bridal lehenga worn once. The sherwani from your own wedding. The party dress that still looks brand new. You know they could be earning money, but one question keeps you from listing them: what if something goes wrong? What if the renter damages it, keeps it, or never pays? It is the right question to ask, and the answer is reassuring. Renting out your clothes on RentNShine is built around protecting the owner at every step. Here is exactly how it works, and what you can do to stay safe.
Is It Safe to Rent Out Your Clothes?
Yes, when you rent through a platform that protects you. The biggest risks of lending clothes come from informal deals: a stranger in your DMs, a bank transfer that never arrives, a deposit nobody agreed on properly, and no record of what was said. RentNShine replaces each of those risks with a system.
Paid Upfront
The renter pays at checkout. RentNShine holds the money until the rental is complete.
Deposit-Backed
A refundable security deposit, set by you, covers genuine damage.
Everything Recorded
Dispatch, delivery, return and inspection are all timestamped on the order.

You Get Paid, Every Time
The most common worry is simple: “Will I actually get my money?” On RentNShine, you never chase a renter for payment. Here is how the money flows.
The renter pays upfront
Payment is taken at checkout, before the outfit leaves your home.
RentNShine holds it safely
The money is held against the order, so it is there for you and for any claim that needs settling.
You are paid after the rental completes
Once the outfit is back and your return inspection closes, your earnings go to your bank or wallet account, on the payout schedule shown in your seller dashboard: immediate, weekly or monthly.
Listing is free. A commission is deducted only from completed orders, and your rate is shown in your seller dashboard. Every time the same outfit is booked again, it earns again. For more on that, read how to earn money from home by renting or selling your dresses.
What If Your Outfit Gets Damaged?
This is where the security deposit protects you. You set the deposit when you list, and RentNShine holds it until your return inspection is closed.
Tears, burns, stains that won’t clean, missing pieces of a multi-piece outfit, alterations you didn’t allow, or the outfit being lost.
Light signs of one evening’s wear. Every rented outfit will be worn, so a fair claim is about real damage, not ordinary use.
How to claim: file the claim on the order with dated photos from before dispatch and after return, plus a realistic repair cost. The renter can accept, offer a different amount, or ask RentNShine to decide. If you can’t agree, RentNShine reviews all the evidence and makes the final call.
If the damage costs more than the deposit, RentNShine cannot take more than it holds, but the extra is recorded and pursued separately. The full steps are in the dispute resolution process.
Tip: set your deposit to what a genuine repair would realistically cost, not the outfit’s full retail price. A fair deposit protects you without scaring renters away.
What If It Isn’t Returned?
Every rental has a booked return date, and the renter must send the outfit back on that date, with all its pieces and packaging. If they are late, the order is flagged as overdue, and a late return can reduce their deposit.
If the outfit doesn’t come back at all, open a case on the order. The money stays held while the case runs, both sides submit evidence, and RentNShine makes a final decision. Because every handover is timestamped, there is always a clear record of when the outfit left you and whether it was sent back.
No Need to Meet Strangers
Courier Delivery
Most orders go by tracked courier. You pack the outfit and hand it over. No meeting needed.
Local Pickup
Only if you choose to offer it. Each handover is confirmed with a one-time code, so only the person who booked can collect.
Details Shared Only as Needed
Contact and address details are shared only as far as delivery or pickup requires. All chat stays inside the app.
You Stay in Control
Renting out your clothes doesn’t mean saying yes to everyone. You decide who, when and how.
Accept or decline any booking
If dates don’t suit you, decline while the order is in the confirmed stage. The renter gets a full refund, so no one is left out of pocket.
Built-in time to clean and check
By default, 5 preparation days are blocked on each side of every booking. If your cleaning takes longer, set a longer window.
Your outfit, your terms
Choose rent, sale or both, set your price and deposit, and block any dates you need the outfit yourself.
Control comes with one responsibility. Once you mark an order ready to ship, it locks, and you have 48 hours to hand it to the courier. Renters plan around fixed event dates, and repeated late cancellations affect your standing. The seller guidelines explain every rule in plain words.
6 Habits That Protect You as a Seller
Build your evidence before anything happens
1. Photograph the outfit, front, back and details, right before dispatch. 2. Photograph it again the moment it comes back. 3. Disclose every flaw in your listing, with a photo.
Keep everything clear and on the platform
4. List exactly what ships, such as the dupatta, inner or jewellery. 5. Set a realistic deposit. 6. Keep every chat and payment inside RentNShine.

Red Flags to Watch For
Most renters simply want a beautiful outfit for their event. But a few warning signs are worth knowing, and RentNShine treats them seriously.
Anyone who wants to take the deal off RentNShine
Be careful if a renter offers to pay you by bank transfer, mobile wallet or cash, asks to move to WhatsApp before an order exists, or pressures you over dates. Paying outside the platform removes every protection: no held payment, no deposit, no record and no claim route. Decline, and report them from the listing or order page.
